Quick Motor Cleaning Tutorial
First, your supplies...
A dirty motor, motor cleaner, compressed air, some paper towels, a well-ventilated space.
I start by removing the motor from the chassis. Some motor cleaners are plastic-safe but I would rather not take the chance and it's much easier to clean the motor once it's separated from the car.
Then I get a few layers of paper towel, fold them over and lay the motor inside. I orient the motor so I can access the screw holes.
I give it a few quick blasts of electrical parts cleaner, not too much or it will soak through the paper onto your hands...I am sure this stuff isn't good for you.
Once I am satisfied that I am not getting any significant gunk out of the motor, I hit it with some compressed air.
Then I set it on a paper towel in front of a fan and just put it all back together before I race. I usually let it sit for a couple of days before I put it back. It may not be necessary but I usually clean my motors a few days before races anyway.

If you want to take it to the next step you can use bearing/bushing oil and comm drops to keep the motor running as smoothly as possible!

good point cdog.
You will have to lube the motor after cleaning it this way since the motor cleaner will blast away any lube on the bushings/bearings...I guess I need a part II. |
