View Full Version : Max Torque Mod

I just completed a mod that I will call "MAX TORQUE". This mod is to raise the current limit to the motor. There are two resistors (R2, R21) that are on the bases of the transistors that drive the motor. The stock ones on my Honda Civic where 220 ohm. I replaced these with 100 ohm resistors to increase the maximum torque available to the motor. It now takes off faster and doesn't get stuck as easy. Give it a try!

Hi Tony,

A few questions for you...

1. Where'd you get the 100ohm resistors?
2. Do you have a clearer picture, the current one is blurry?

thanks.

The resistors that need to be changed are marked in this picture.
I don't believe you can get SMD (Surface Mount) resistors at radio shack, you would have to find an electronic supply store. They are very inexpensive.

Alright then, where'd you get YOUR 100ohm resistors? Do you have a link to an Electronics Store?

thanks.

any drawbacks noticed so far? shorter run times? More motor heat?
Thanks

From my experiments with those resistors, I found that current continued to increase to the motor the smaller resistors I used. Actually, I shorted them and I didn't notice any negative side effects (other than only 4 minute run time) and I would have left it that way but I replaced the transistors with mosfets. The voltage from the IC dropped when I shorted the resistors and hence didn't destroy the transistors. In any case, that 100ohm mod is much better than leaving the 220ohm resistors.

I got my resistors from an old hard drive.

Tony, you mind if I stick this in the FAQ?? I'll wait until a few more people try it before it goes in though, we need some more results.

Sounds good to me

Alright, I'll probably try this out this weekend. I'll just jumper mine though, as putting a new resitor in goes against my philosophy of "Cheap, easy and fast".

I shall retun with pics.

http://www.markhannahsurplus.com/resistor.php

they have them, they are number RK73H2A1000FT

cost each is $0.02 and they have 3500 of them.

They also have them, at about $0.89 each

good luck all.

2 cents? Sheesh, that seems excessively cheap. Why not just order 50 of them then and not bother with the change?

You said that the smaller resistors you use the better the results(speedwise only). I was wondering, what if you just leave them out. Will it work still?

Thanks

nymrm
11-05-2002, 06:15 PM
If you leave them out the car won't run. If you short them out (ie 0 ohms) it will run but there may be risk of burning something out.

They must have put them in there for a reason in the first place. Maybe over specced though so as a backup??

how do you install it
do you just pull it out and stick the new ones in

You have to use solder. I take a heavy piece of wire, wrap it around the iron tip and make a much smaller effective iron and tip.
I am looking for surface mount LEDs also, if anybody has any sources.

Holy Cow! Good idea. I have so many old HDs it is not funny.

I know my resistor color codes BBROYGBVGWGS,
but can someone help me identify SMD resistor values?

Thanks

you can go here to get surface mount leds http://www.toyeast.com/
i bought some i'm just waiting for them to get here:D and do you know some one that can help me with my bad 3.8 motor it died this weekend it will still go but the car needs a push to get moving i don't know whats wrong with it reply if you know anyone that can help

Thanks for the tip on SMD LEDS. I think that they are a better idea.

For DarthRacer, No 3.8 motor can be high speed and torky at the same time without being designed for running times about 30 seconds or less. NiMH would be absolutely mandatory. You may fix your problem by seating the motor, Chap Sticking the gears, and polish and graphite lube the rear axel. I hope that this helps. Also a DansAm body is smarter for the 3.8 due to their lightness. BAE

 how would i seat the motor? and what is a dansam body and where would i get one? if you know where i can get one let me know okay thanks for the helpful advice.:)

will this work on a dual 150mAH mod car?

baleisen

You carefully align the motor by inserting tiny shims. Toilet paper is good for very small changes. Paper for thicker.
Tiny sells DansAm bodies. BAE

FETs! What was the part number of the FETs you used? I was thinking of doing the same thing, but FETs require a higher "turn-on" voltage than bipolar transistors. And since the supply is only a single cell, I canned that idea. The Zips can sure use a better H-bridge circuit!

Anyone know if this can also be done for Bits?

fury, if you have a bit, do my 3 cell mod. you'll smoke the zip like that. fet upgrade comming soon. i will now hack into the pcb board and give you the results :D

baleisen

Since you are soldering anyway.
How about a Bit circuit board. Give it both the FET and 3 cell mod. Put it in a Zip shell so the 3 batteries are all inside. BAE

Field Effect Transistor - lots of electronics use this type of transistor, and no, it's not an "American thing."

hi guys ive got a couple of new mods like if u want to change the weight on ur tinyrc u can use congi peises, inside there are metal shavings that can be put into the car and also i got lighting under my zip all u do is drill a small hole in the bottom but that is big enough to hold the led(s) snugly and then just follow the prosedure for standard led installation:D :D :D :D :D its very cool just dont lower the led to far to the ground or that will slow u down and try not to over do the weight although the right amount of weight will make u go faster it is also better to wrap the shavings in tape so they dony rattle or get in the way if u got questions email me at ilyakoch00@go.com

hey guys, yo tinyrc, im new u run this place right?
u should have more stuff on zipzaps like on the parts shop u should include zipzaps. plus whens the next contest ive got a black porsche with neon lights, twin tail pipes and i found a special wire that is stiff for the antenna pretty cool huh? :D :bdrop:

How did you find out where the resistors were in the circuit board?

teamoutburst
06-08-2003, 09:26 AM
Actually dont answer that, i found out myself. I have managed to put together a 'max toque mod' for a bit char-g. Your board may be differently set up because i am using a Panther as the model. Anyway the resistor is simply inline between a pin on a black rectangle thing and the motor. You quite simply put a resistor of the same value of the resistor marked X on top of the other resistor so the current has two resistors to go through, therefore halving the resistance of the resistor marked X. You should now have a sandwhich of two surface mount resistors, You can still get the PCB case back on though because they are so small. It now wheel spins when ever i go forward and slam it into reverse, when i didnt have this mod it used to slow down rather than wheel spining and then go in reverse.

yeah, it is quite a good improvement, it can wheelspin now, it used to slow down with out skiding now it wheel spins, great for drifting.

QUESTION!!! Does this increase speed or JUST torque? And I was wondering, instead of doing this, could you just solder some wires???? Get a closeup of the pic of the mosfet-modded car at RCmod. (Hey, THAT site didn't get filtered LOL) you will see some blue wires and where should I solder on the ZZ????

sweetmore torqu is what i need i just completed my mosfet mod on my MS but i olny changed the fets on the top of the bord (see the pic i got the mod from rcmod.com) but if i can change thoes littel guys and get more out of it that would rock!!

PS: the fets are the black line at the top ( in thin pic) of the PCB the ones with the wires on them and yes that is a FULL fet mod F&R and L&R stering!! i love it!
